The Grange - Then and Now
The Grange has gone through numerous changes since it was first built in 1872. From family home to Boys Seminary and finally into a community centre. This house sheltered Quakers, Church of England members, Jews and Catholics. It was a place of refuge for those escaping the horrors of Hitler's Europe and it was a training and camp ground for those preparing to lay down their lives to stop Hitler.
The first owners, the Backhouse family, were wealthy bankers. The Rogersons were a military family and the Spielmans were industrialists. The St. John of God's Hospitallers order started in France and then became active in the UK, opening hospitals and seminaries to train young boys into the Order.
The Master's bedroom and the Mistress' bedroom were later turned into the chapel during the tenure of St. John of God's. That chapel is now a day care centre for young children.
I hope you enjoy the few photos we have of The Grange during its various ownerships.
