Various Incidents

17 June to 18 June 2005

During various times over the evening a number of incidents, occurring outside of vigils, were reported.

At approximately 10:22pm Colin Nunn and Chris Carnegie were doing some base readings with the EMF Meter and the Thermometer. While in the area of the main staircase, Colin was pushed by an unseen force. Chris witnessed this incident and stated that the movement of Colin’s body did indeed look as if something had pushed him from behind with a certain amount of force. Earlier, both Chris and Colin also claimed to feel spells of dizziness on the back stairs.

It was reported to Cindy and Jo, by Eric Laycock, Manager of The Grange, that the widow of the former caretaker had been to the location earlier in the day and reported sighting her deceased husband in the Caretaker’s apartments.
While the teams were setting up in the base room (Fletcher Hall) Colin was approached by a woman who is a regular visitor to The Grange. She claimed to have seen the form of a ghostly woman with long blond hair and wearing a white gown.

While the teams were sitting at the tables during a break Tony Liddell of Otherworld North East was taking photographs of the team members. One of the photographs of Cindy clearly shows an ‘orb’ in front of her. After this photo was taken Cindy’s camera would not work for the rest of the evening, even after changing batteries.

Cindy heard the sound of footsteps walking towards her as she left the base room during a break. This occurred just outside of the men’s toilets.

On another occasion, again during a break, Cindy left the base room to find Colin and Chris. She believed them to be outside. As she came up to the men’s toilet area she noticed the light on. Thinking it was Colin or Chris she called out their names. She received a mumbled reply, but it was not Colin or Chris. Then she heard footsteps coming from the men’s toilet, but nobody appeared. Cindy ran back into the base room and asked Jo to go with her to locate Colin and Chris.

While coming in from outside during another break Cindy and Barbara were walking towards the stairs that lead up to the old caretaker’s apartments. On the wall above the first landing is a window. Cindy came to a sudden stop and told Barbara that she had just seen someone reflected in the window and they were coming down the stairs. Upon further investigation nobody could be seen on the stairs between the first and second landing. Then Cindy heard the sound of a man’s footsteps coming down the stairs between the first and second landing, but there was no visual sign of a human presence. Barbara confirmed that she too had heard the footsteps. Then they both heard the footsteps coming down the steps that they were standing at the foot of. At this point Cindy quickly headed to the base room (at a slow run!) with Barbara following. They reported the incident to other team members.

Throughout the evening various team members reported replacing batteries with brand new ones, only to have them drain immediately. Video and camera equipment ceased working in certain areas, and some cameras refused to work for the rest of the evening, even after replacing batteries, checking settings and changing memory cards. Others reported battery drain in their EMF Meters, thermometers and Walkie Talkies.

At about 01:32, all teams were in place at their second vigil locations. Team 1 were stationed at the outside location in the wooded area, Team 2 were on the main staircase and entry and Team 3 (Colin's team) were in the old Caretaker’s Apartments. At 01:37 a message came through the walkie-talkie that Chris was carrying for Team 1. Colin’s voice was heard coming through, saying ’ 44.’ From the wooded area Team 1 could hear loud voices coming from off in the distance so thought that maybe Colin was sending out a call for assistance. Chris got ready to go check on Colin’s team when another message from Colin came through saying ‘false alarm.’ This wasn’t considered odd or out-of-place so the investigation continued. However, on the evening of the 19th of June, Jo and Chris visited Colin and Cindy at home and naturally talk of the investigation came up. Chris asked Colin why he had sent out a ‘44’ message on the walkie-talkie. Then Jo said that she and Team 2 were also curious about this, as they had also heard the message. But, Colin never made that call! Colin stated that he had leaned against something and it had depressed the ‘talk’ button on the walkie-talkie, but he never spoke into it except to say it was a ‘false alarm.’ He insists that he never said code ’44.’ Upon further investigation we learned that Code 44 (10-44) in CB talk is code for ‘I have a message for you.’ We found this to be pretty strange.

In the upstairs servant’s quarters is a room at the end of the hall where no entry was permitted. This rule was imposed due to the nature of the room, which has as part of its floor a stained glass window that is opened by a rope and pulley system. This window is above the area of the former chapel. A video camera was placed in a corner of this room and allowed to run during the course of a vigil. A number of orbs appear in the video. Fortunately, a couple of flying insects, as well as a spider, can also been seen in the video, giving us a good comparison between bugs and purported orbs.

*** UPDATE ***
24th of June 2005 - Cindy spoke with Eric Laycock of The Grange and asked him if he knew about anyone connected with The Grange having an interest in CB Radios, short wave, etc... He said that he didn't know off the top of his head but he would ask around and see if anyone had an answer. Within a few minutes Eric phoned back and said..."Cindy, are you sitting down? I've just found out that Mr. F, the former caretaker, had a CB radio that he used to use while living at The Grange in the caretaker's apartments!"
It was while Colin's team were doing a vigil in the old caretaker's apartments that the strange message of "44" came through on the walkie talkies of Chris on Team 1 and Jo on Team 2, with the voice sounding like Colin, but Colin didn't send the message! To remind everyone, the code 44 (or 10-44) in CB radio chat means "I have a message for you."

*** UPDATE ***
5th of August 2005 - Colin and Cindy gave a presentation and talk at The Grange, which was attended by Eric Laycock, the manager of The Grange, Hugh Jackson, Chairman, as well as the local committee and the local historian, and the Parish Council. The meeting went very well and it was agreed that API were welcome to carry out further investigations. During the course of the evening, which started at 8:00pm and ended shortly after 11:00pm, a number of interesting pieces of information were revealed to us, which backed up many of our findings. Before the first investigation we were only aware of a purported ghost being seen on the main staircase. However, during the course of the investigation incidents happened in a number of other areas, as well as ghostly figures being captured on various cameras.

One of our photos shows Tony holding his EMF meter out in front of him, where at the time not only was he getting a reading, but the "presence" was moving forward and backwards at Tony's request. Upon viewing camera footage of this incident the figure of something can be seen standing in front of Tony, looking almost as if it has just risen from a seated position. While at the meeting last night one of the committee women was very interested in this particular photo and the area that the figure was standing in. It was in this same spot that her son was sitting at on his 40th birthday, when others near him witnessed a strange halo all around him. He died shortly afterwards. It was also in this room that participants of the investigation mentioned a door that kept opening by itself, even after it had been quite firmly closed. We were informed last night that this is a regular occurrence, and even happens after the door has been locked!
Other confirmations were made to us as well.

Colin photographed an area in the basement and when the photos were viewed on the computer a figure or figures can be seen in one shot, but not in any taken before or after. Another woman committee member mentioned that her husband does a lot of the electrical work in the basement and has reported feeling the presence of something in that area. Upon Cindy making mention of an incident in the men's toilet room it was revealed to her that others have witnessed the same type of incidents, such as lights being turned on and various noises heard.

Other incidents mentioned by Eric and Hugh include lights being found on in the morning after they have been turned off for the night upon closing The Grange for the evening, children's toys being moved, toys that suddenly make noise when they usually need to be handled to make noise, doors opening themselves, doors locking when they shouldn't, etc....
One further incident of note that occurred during the presentation. For the presentation Colin had set up a table containing some of the "tools of the trade," including EMF meter, Temperature Gun, walkie talkies, etc.... Just as Colin started talking about the "walkie talkie incident" that occurred during our investigation one of the walkie talkies began making strange noises. When he finished talking about the incident the walkie talkie became quiet and made no further noises during the course of the evening.
